The Pikillaqta Archaeological Park is one of the most famous and best-preserved pre-Inca sites of the ancient cities that existed in Peru. It was developed between 600 and 1000 AD by the Wari culture from the Central Andes,Ayacucho. Specialists from the Cultural Department of Cusco discovered figures of warriors, anthropomorphic figures, silver-plated pieces representing women warriors and more than 100 pieces representing parts of human bodies manufactured in spondylus, among other objects.
This is an extraordinary finding that our researchers have achieved because it allows us to know more about the Wari culture and reveals the high degree of commercial and cultural integration that existed in ancient Peru," said Culture Minister Rogers Valencia.
The discovery was made in one of the 15 excavation units, located in the southeast corner of the so-called main square of Pikillaqta. In a hole 70 centimeters in diameter and approximately two meters deep, two camelid skeletons were discovered, associated with a burning event, with spondylus shells and two small silver sheets made with the laminate-embossed technique.
Also, to a greater depth a ceremonial offering of circular form was found, in whose central part a bar was nailed. A metal sheet 73 centimeters long and 18 centimeters high divided the offering. Around the bar was discovered six small idols, separated into two groups, of which two are zoomorphic characters, two warriors and two cougars, made in a silver copper alloy by the emptying technique.
At the foot of these figures, 24 silver-plated pieces representing women warriors were found; as well as three complete anthropomorphic pieces, tied of hands and 107 pieces that represent parts of human bodies, like arms, legs, heads and backs, all manufactured in spondylus.
